Students at Northeast College of Health Sciences are called to heal and transform lives. Often, they achieve that treating patients in a health center setting. But it can happen in other ways, too, as demonstrated when Northeast chiropractic students volunteered on Oct. 9 to help build a home through Habitat for Humanity of Seneca County.

All chiropractic students at Northeast College are required to do five hours of community service and write a paper to reflect on volunteer experience. Students will tell you, though, that beyond the credits earned, it's really about helping those in need in the community where they live and learn.

Northeast students have been volunteering with Habitat for Humanity of Seneca County (HFHSC) for more than nine years, assisting with projects that range from helping prepare ground for a sidewalk to painting walls of a recently renovated home to building a shed that's part of a brand-new housing unit.

Northeast College President Dr. Michael Mestan, who is also a member of the HFHSC Board, says that having the College's students volunteer in the community is a natural fit. "Northeast students understand the value of working hands-on and making a difference," Mestan noted. "The commitment and motivation that makes them outstanding future healthcare leaders also drives them to dedicate their time and talents, so their neighbors have safe, healthy environments. We're very proud of our students and the strong connection they have to their community in Seneca Falls."

Habitat for Humanity of Seneca County partners with people in the community to help build or renovate existing homes to create affordable housing. A global nonprofit housing organization working in local communities across all 50 states in the U.S., Habitat has long been a favorite choice for Northeast College students fulfilling their volunteer duties.
