An Important Message from President Mestan to the College Community: Mar. 13, 2020
Dear College Community:
As you know, we have been carefully monitoring the outbreak of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19). This past week has seen a rapid growth of the outbreak, including a declaration by the World Health Organization (WHO) that COVID-19 has reached global pandemic status. As well, new and significant best practices to contain the virus have recently been issued by our local, state and federal governments. Though there are currently no known cases of COVID-19 at our College, it is clear that we must acknowledge the evidence before us: we are in the midst of extraordinary times, and we must act accordingly to protect the health and safety of our community.
With those best interests in mind, I share with you that the Transitions and Commencement ceremonies are canceled for Winter 2020. This was a difficult decision, but is also the most appropriate decision the College could make in the face of the situation and recommendations before us. I understand this announcement may engender feelings of disappointment and sadness. The Transitions and Commencement ceremonies are much-anticipated events for our community, through which we recognize important milestones and great accomplishments. Know that, though we will not be holding Winter events as scheduled, we are absolutely committed to finding ways in the future to publicly honor and celebrate our students' success. We will let you know details as soon as we are able. That is my promise to you.
As the COVID-19 outbreak continues to evolve, more news and updates will likely emerge in the days ahead. We will remain in close contact to share information, and continue to keep you updated on the actions the College is taking to ensure our community's well-being.
This is a challenging time for us all, as individuals and as a community. I believe -- I know -- that together we will face this challenge with the strength, grace, focus and dedication that is at the core of our College. Thank you for your understanding. Take care of yourselves and of one another, and be well.
